About us

The Charities Commission was established by government in 2005 to register and monitor charitable organisations in New Zealand and to provide them with support and advice on good governance and management.

The Minister responsible for the Commission is the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector.

Komihana Kaupapa Atawhai

The formal definition of Komihana Kaupapa Atawhai is ‘the Commission that embraces and supports philanthropic principles and practices’.

The name was given by Commission Board member Amohaere Houkamau, after consultation with iwi.
